RTL Deutschland is one of Germany’s leading media organizations, producing national and regional news across multiple locations and platforms. That scale set the constraint. The broadcaster runs a highly diverse news production environment: ntv alongside numerous regional news operations, each of which had developed its own workflows, automation requirements, production processes, and technical infrastructures over many years. RTL Deutschland needed to unify editorial operations without flattening those differences, and it needed live news to continue throughout.
RTL Deutschland reached a major milestone in May 2026 with the migration of its national news channel ntv from the legacy NC Power newsroom system to Octopus news production system. Days later, the new joint RTL and ntv morning show, Deutschland am Morgen, launched on the Octopus-based production environment. At the center of the project is a redesigned connection between the newsroom and Viz Mosart studio automation.

What changed between the newsroom and the studio
RTL Deutschland’s previous production environment connected newsroom operations to Viz Mosart studio automation through a legacy third-party integration. That architecture worked, and it also limited flexibility and relied on components that were increasingly difficult to maintain and evolve.
RTL Deutschland, Octopus Newsroom, and LOGIC Media Solutions redesigned the workflow from the ground up. The teams developed a new integration layer and rebuilt critical production logic directly within Octopus story templates, so that automation- related information is managed inside the editorial workflow itself. Viz Mosart remained the studio automation system throughout; what changed is how the newsroom connects to it.
This changed the relationship between editorial planning and studio execution. Journalists and producers now prepare stories and rundowns in one environment while staying closely integrated with studio automation. Embedding automation intelligence directly into the newsroom workflow reduced complexity, improved operational efficiency, and strengthened the connection between editorial intent and technical execution.
“The connection between the newsroom and studio automation is usually the part of a migration nobody wants to open. We redesigned it from the ground up and rebuilt the production logic inside Octopus story templates, so automation information is managed in the editorial workflow rather than in a separate layer between two systems.”
Jan Polak, Head of Projects at Octopus Newsroom

Regional operations kept their own way of working
RTL Deutschland’s regional locations use varying studio technologies, device configurations, and production practices. Many newsroom modernization projects standardize workflows across every operation. RTL Deutschland required an approach that respected the requirements of individual locations instead.
The Octopus implementation therefore accommodates different regional workflows through flexible configuration and integration planning. Regional teams keep the production methods best suited to their operations while working on a common newsroom infrastructure and a shared editorial environment. The implementation runs on a centralized Octopus architecture hosted in Cologne, giving national and regional teams one connected platform. Balancing standardization against regional flexibility was essential to the outcome.
The project partner
LOGIC Media Solutions served as project manager, systems integrator, training provider, and primary point of contact throughout the implementation. Working with RTL Deutschland, Octopus Newsroom, and multiple technology partners, LOGIC ran the technical workshops, coordinated third-party integrations, and built migration plans intended to reduce operational risk while news stayed on air.

What the project shows
The migration of ntv and the launch of Deutschland am Morgen are outcomes of a wider modernization program at RTL Deutschland. Both were delivered while live news stayed on air. The project shows how a newsroom architecture built on story templates can unify distributed operations, simplify automation workflows, and support centralized and regional production models in one environment.
“Octopus has been one of Viz Mozart’s integration partners in broadcast newsrooms for a decade. Open interfaces between the newsroom system and studio automation are what allow a broadcaster to build the workflow that works best for its team, with the flexibility wanted and the security needed for operational efficiency. RTL Deutschland’s project is a great example of how broadcasters can modernize workflows while considering the needs of regional teams, and without interrupting its regular programs.”
